How to Create a Promo Code that Removes Sales Tax

SimpleTix allows you to create codes easily and personalize them as needed.

One customization in particular is to create codes that remove sales tax.



To create a promo code that removes sales tax:

1. Go to manager.simpletix.com

2. Once logged in, from the top menu click on Events.

3. Click on the search bar and type your event name to locate it.

5. On the left panel, click Promo Code.

6. Once within the Promo Code page, click Create Promo Code on the top right.

  • This will initiate a pop-up for you to configure your code.

  • If you already have an existing code, click on it then choose Action > Edit





7. Type your Promo Code Name.

  • This will be the exact code that needs to be typed for redemption.

8. You'll have the option to tag the code with a category.

  • You can pick an existing one or create a new category.
  • This is useful for sorting and tracking certain codes.

9. Specify the number of times the code can be used.

10. Add how many tickets within the order the code can be applied to.

  • For example, someone buys 20 tickets in 1 order. 
  • If you set 10, only 10 of the 20 tickets will be discounted.

11. Specify when you'd like the code to be active.

  • You can set it to immediately after creation or add a specific date.

12. If you'd like the code to have an expiration date, click More Options. Toggle the "Set an Expiration Date" to ON.

  • This option will be off by default.

13. Once enabled, an option to set the expiration date will appear.

14. Add in your preferred date and time for the code's expiration.

15. Under "Is this code for a school or organization that is not liable for sales tax?" choose YES to remove the sales tax from the order.

NOTE: If you do not want to apply a discount and only need sales tax removed, skip steps 16 & 17. Leave the discount value as zero.



16. Choose the type of discount you want to apply. 

  • Flat Rate per Ticket - reduces the ticket cost by a fixed value. 
  • Percentage Discount - reduces the cost based on a percentage of the ticket price.


NOTE: If you do not want to apply a discount and only need sales tax removed, skip steps 16 & 17.

17. Specify your preferred flat rate or percentage.

18. Confirm which event(s) the promo code will be valid for.

  • Valid on All Events - allows the code to be used across all events on your SImpleTix site.
  • Valid on <Event Name> - allows the code to be used for all dates and times for a particular event.
  • Valid on <Event Name & Time> - allows you to select which event times the code is valid for.
  • Valid only for <Event Sections / Price Groups> - allows you to select which ticket category the code can be used for.


Confirm which event(s) the promo code will be valid for.



19. Once done with your changes, click Create Promo Code.

  • This will automatically add the code to your list and activate it during your specified validity period.

20. Once you have a promo code created, you can share it via a custom link. This automatically applies the discount on checkout without manually typing it in.
