# Managing Sales Tax Settings

> Learn how to change sales tax rates, configure tax display options, and set exemptions for customers in your SimpleTix account.

# 1. Changing the default Sales Tax Rate for New Events

* Log in to your SimpleTix account.
* Navigate to your [store settings](https://manager.simpletix.com/general/store).
* In the “Tax Rate” field, enter your desired sales tax rate and click **Save**.
* *Note:* This rate applies automatically to new events. For existing events, you have two options:
  * **Apply to all events:** When saving a new site-level tax rate, you can choose to apply it to all existing events at once.
  * **Update individually:** Open the event’s details page, locate the “Tax Rate” setting, update it with the new value, and click **Save**.

# 2. Configuring Whether Tax Appears in the Price or is Reported Separately

**By default:**\
SimpleTix includes the tax amount in the ticket’s displayed total price.

**To adjust this setting:**

* In your [store settings](https://manager.simpletix.com/general/store), locate the option labeled “Is your tax included in the product price?”
* To include the tax in the total price (while tracking it separately for reporting):
  * Select **Yes**.
* To display the tax as a separate line item on the receipt:
  * Leave the option unchecked.

### Showing GST / VAT on Receipts

If your tax is included in the product price (set to **Yes** above), you can choose to display the GST / VAT amount as a separate line on customer receipts and in Square.

* In your [store settings](https://manager.simpletix.com/general/store), check the box labeled **"If tax is included do you want to show it on the receipt and in square?"**
* When enabled, receipts will display a "GST included in total" (or equivalent VAT) line showing the tax amount, even though it is already included in the ticket price.

<Tip>
  This is especially useful for organizations in regions that require GST or VAT to be visible on receipts, such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and the EU.
</Tip>

# 3. Adjusting the Taxability of the Service Fee

* On the same [store settings page](https://manager.simpletix.com/general/store):
  * Find the “Is Service Fee Taxable?” option.
  * Choose **Yes** or **No** according to your needs.
  * Click **Save**.
* This setting determines whether the service fee applied to each order will have tax applied.

# 4. Exempting Some Customers from Sales Tax

* Create a promo code that adjusts (or “removes”) the tax on an order.
* Steps:
  1. Go to the [Promo Codes](https://manager.simpletix.com/promote/promocode) section in your manager dashboard.
  2. Create a new promo code.
  3. Click the blue text that says "Is this code for a school or organization that is not liable for sales tax?", and set the option to Yes to remove the tax from the order.
  4. Inform qualifying customers to use this promo code at checkout.

# 5. Additional Clarifications

* **Sales Tax Handling:**\
  SimpleTix collects and tracks tax details but does not remit sales tax on your behalf. Tax funds are passed on to your payment processor, and you remain responsible for filing. SimpleTix cannot provide advice on whether or not your events are subject to Sales Tax

<Warning title="Zip Code-Based Tax Calculation">
  SimpleTix does not support automatically calculating sales tax rates based on the buyer's zip code. The tax rate is set at the event level and applies to all purchases regardless of the customer's location.
</Warning>

<Tip title="Tax Rate Flexibility">
  You can set different sales tax rates for different events, which allows some flexibility in handling regional tax differences. For Square items, you can set tax rates at the item level when adding them in the Suggested Square items under the event.
